10 Australian road trips that I’ll never forget

Australia is one of the few countries where the journey often becomes more memorable than the destination. I lived here for six years and managed to travel around the entire country twice!

Some of my favorite Australian travel experiences were pulling over at an unexpected lookout, watching landscapes slowly change through the windshield, or realizing I've driven hundreds of kilometers without seeing another car.

These are the 10 Australian road trips that have stayed with me the most, and the routes that completely changed how I saw the country.

The Margaret River Loop is the road trip I would recommend to anyone who wants to spend a few days simply enjoying life.

Starting in Perth, the landscape slowly changes as you head south. Vineyards appear, towering karri forests line the roads, and before long the Indian Ocean begins making regular appearances through the trees.

What I loved most about this drive was the variety. In a single day, I could visit a winery, explore an ancient cave, and watch surfers tackle huge waves along the coast.

The drive never feels rushed. Some of my favorite moments happened between the major attractions, whether that meant stopping at a small cellar door, pulling over at a coastal lookout, or lingering over a long lunch.

Hamelin Bay became one of the experiences I still think about. Standing in the shallows while stingrays cruised past the shoreline felt completely unexpected.

More than anything, this drive changed the way I thought about Western Australia. I expected wine country, but I didn't expect such an incredible combination of beaches, forests, caves, and food all within a few hours of each other.

How the Margaret River Loop fits into your Australia itinerary

The Margaret River Loop pairs perfectly with Perth and offers one of Australia's best short road trips, especially for travelers interested in food, wine, and coastal scenery.

  • My Travel Tip: Drive the loop anti-clockwise. Heading south inland and returning north along Caves Road means the ocean reveals itself gradually on the return journey, which makes the coastal section even more memorable.

April–May for autumn colors; December–February for wildflowers

The Great Alpine Road completely changed what I thought Australia could look like.

Before driving it, I never really associated Australia with alpine landscapes, winding mountain roads, or autumn colours.

Starting in northeast Victoria, the route climbs through valleys, forests, and mountain towns before crossing the Victorian Alps and descending toward Gippsland.

What I appreciate most about this drive is how dramatically the scenery changes. In Bright, the streets glow with autumn colours during April and May, while higher up around Mount Hotham the landscape feels surprisingly alpine.

During summer, the same roads lead to wildflower-covered plateaus and walking trails.

My favorite section is the descent from Mount Hotham toward Omeo. The road twists through the Cobungra Valley with long sweeping bends, mountain views, and very little traffic.

It became one of those drives where I stopped caring about the destination and simply enjoyed being behind the wheel.

More than anything, this route reminded me that Australia isn't only beaches and deserts. The Victorian Alps feel like an entirely different country.

How the Great Alpine Road fits into your Australia itinerary

The Great Alpine Road pairs perfectly with Melbourne and Victoria's High Country. I think it's one of Australia's best road trips for travelers who enjoy mountain scenery, small towns, and taking their time between destinations.

  • My Travel Tip: If you can, spend at least two nights in Bright. The town is especially beautiful during autumn, and slowing down there makes the entire drive feel less rushed.

May - September

The Gibb River Road taught me that not every great road trip is supposed to be easy.

Unlike many of Australia's famous drives, this one demands some effort. The corrugated roads, river crossings, dust, and long distances between fuel stops quickly remind you that you're traveling through one of the country's most remote regions.

What stayed with me wasn't a single viewpoint or attraction. It was the feeling of gradually leaving the modern world behind. Each day seemed to become quieter, the landscapes larger, and the distances between places longer.

Of course, the destinations themselves are extraordinary.

Swimming beneath the waterfall at Bell Gorge, floating in the warm pools of Zebedee Springs, and driving through the dramatic landscapes around El Questro all became highlights of my journey.

Crossing the Pentecost River with the Cockburn Ranges rising in the background felt like one of those classic Australian moments that lives up to the photographs.

The Gibb River Road reminded me that some trips are memorable precisely because they aren't comfortable. The effort required to reach these places is part of what makes them so rewarding.

How the Gibb River Road fits into your Australia itinerary

The Gibb River Road pairs perfectly with Broome, Kununurra, and the Kimberley. For travelers willing to venture well beyond Australia's major tourist routes, I think it's one of the country's greatest adventures.

  • My Travel Tip: Give yourself at least a week and avoid rushing between stops. The best experiences on the Gibb often happen when you decide to stay somewhere longer than planned.

March - November

The Pacific Coast Drive taught me that some of the best road trips happen when you stop trying to get somewhere quickly.

On paper, the drive from Sydney to Byron Bay doesn't seem particularly remote or adventurous.

The roads are easy, the towns are well established, and most people complete it in just a couple of days. I think that's a mistake.

The places I remember most weren't the major destinations at either end.

They were the smaller stops along the way. Bellingen became one of my favorite towns on the entire east coast, and the rainforest around Dorrigo felt completely unexpected so close to the ocean.

Even Crescent Head, with its quiet beaches and laid-back atmosphere, made me want to stay longer than I'd planned.

By the time I reached Byron Bay, I realized the drive itself had become the highlight. The beaches, small towns, and changing landscapes between Sydney and Byron turned what could have been a simple journey into one of the most enjoyable weeks I've spent on the road.

How the Pacific Coast Drive fits into your Australia itinerary

The Pacific Coast Drive pairs perfectly with Sydney, Byron Bay, and Queensland's northern coast. For first-time visitors, I think it's one of the easiest and most rewarding road trips in Australia.

  • My Travel Tip: Give yourself at least five days if possible. The smaller towns between Sydney and Byron are often the places you'll remember most.

May to October

The Savannah Way made me realize just how enormous northern Australia really is.

Covering three states and thousands of kilometres, this isn't a road trip that you squeeze into a long weekend. The distances are vast, the towns are small, and there are stretches where the landscape seems to continue forever.

What stayed with me most was how dramatically the country changes along the route.

One day I was exploring the lava tubes at Undara, and a few days later I found myself floating in the warm water of the Mataranka Thermal Pools.

By the time I reached Katherine Gorge and eventually crossed into the Kimberley, it felt as though I'd driven through several different countries.

My favorite section was the drive west from Katherine toward Western Australia. The transition into the red landscapes of the Kimberley happened gradually, and I found myself stopping more often simply to take in the scenery.

This route taught me that Australia isn't just big. It's incredibly diverse, and sometimes the only way to appreciate that is to spend weeks crossing it one day at a time.

How the Savannah Way fits into your Australia itinerary

The Savannah Way connects many of northern Australia's most remarkable destinations, including Cairns, Katherine, and the Kimberley. For travelers with the time to commit, I think it's one of the country's greatest long-distance adventures.

  • My Travel Tip: Build extra days into your itinerary. The Savannah Way rewards flexibility, and some of the most memorable stops are the ones you didn't plan.

April - October

The Nullarbor taught me that a road trip doesn't always need attractions every hour to be memorable.

At first glance, the drive seems almost empty. The landscape is flat, the towns are few and far between, and the longest straight stretch of road in Australia simply disappears into the horizon.

Yet after a day, I began to understand why so many people deliberately make this crossing.

The sheer scale of the landscape becomes the attraction. The Bunda Cliffs rising above the Southern Ocean feel impossibly large, while the endless plain creates a sense of distance that is difficult to experience anywhere else.

At night, the stars seemed brighter than anywhere I had been before.

I also found that the lack of distractions changed the rhythm of the trip. There was less urgency, fewer decisions, and more time simply spent watching the landscape unfold through the windshield.

The Nullarbor reminded me that Australia isn't only about famous destinations. Sometimes the emptiest places leave the strongest impression.

How the Nullarbor fits into your Australia itinerary

The Nullarbor is the ultimate journey between South Australia and Western Australia. For travelers driving between Adelaide and Perth, I think it's one of Australia's most unforgettable experiences.

  • My Travel Tip: Drive eastbound if you can. Watching the trees gradually disappear and the vast treeless plain reveal itself makes the transition feel even more dramatic.

April - October

The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation showed me that some of Australia's most memorable road trips don't need to be long.

Leaving Cairns, the Cook Highway hugs the coastline with the Coral Sea on one side and rainforest-covered mountains on the other. Even before reaching the Daintree, the scenery feels different from almost anywhere else in the country.

The real shift happens at the Daintree River ferry.

Once I crossed the river, the road felt quieter, darker, and far more remote. The rainforest closed overhead, the light filtered through the canopy, and suddenly the cassowary crossing signs didn't seem quite so amusing.

Mossman Gorge became one of my favorite stops, but the moment that stayed with me most was arriving at Cape Tribulation early in the morning.

Standing on the beach and looking south, with ancient rainforest running directly into the Coral Sea, felt unlike anywhere else I'd visited in Australia.

This drive reminded me that Australia isn't always about distance. Sometimes a few hours on the road can transport you into an entirely different world.

How the Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive fits into your Australia itinerary

This drive pairs perfectly with Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef. If you're visiting Tropical North Queensland, I think it's one of the essential road trips in Australia.

  • My Travel Tip: Leave Cairns early and try to reach Cape Tribulation around sunrise or sunset. The beaches are quieter, the light is beautiful, and wildlife is often more active.

April - October

The East Coast Drive taught me that Australia reveals itself slowly.

Starting in Sydney, the trip begins with familiar cities and busy beaches, but every few days the landscape changes a little more.

The surf towns of northern New South Wales give way to the subtropical coast around Byron Bay, and somewhere near the Queensland border the whole trip begins to feel warmer, greener, and distinctly tropical.

What I enjoyed most about this drive was how naturally the experiences built on one another.

One day I was walking coastal trails in Noosa, and a few days later I was boarding a boat in Airlie Beach for the Whitsundays. By the time I reached Cairns, the cane fields, rainforest, and tropical climate made it feel like I had arrived in a completely different country.

The section between Airlie Beach and Cairns stayed with me the most. The coastline becomes more relaxed, the reef sits just offshore, and the tropics finally take over.

This drive reminded me that Australia isn't one destination. It's a collection of very different regions connected by a remarkable stretch of coastline.

How the East Coast Drive fits into your Australia itinerary

The East Coast Drive connects many of Australia's most iconic destinations, including Sydney, Byron Bay, Noosa, the Whitsundays, and Cairns. For first-time visitors, I think it's the road trip that delivers the broadest introduction to the country.

  • My Travel Tip: Drive north if you can. Beginning in Sydney and gradually moving into the tropics makes the entire journey feel like an unfolding adventure.

Aprli - October

The Great Ocean Road taught me that some famous places become famous for very good reasons.

From the moment I left Torquay, the drive felt like it was building toward something.

The road twists along the coastline with the Southern Ocean on one side and eucalyptus forest on the other, and every hour seems to reveal another viewpoint, another beach, or another stretch of coastline worth pulling over for.

My favorite part was the sense of anticipation. The Twelve Apostles sit near the western end of the route, so the entire drive slowly works toward them.

Along the way, I found myself stopping at places like Kennett River to look for koalas or spending far longer than planned at Loch Ard Gorge.

By the time I finally reached the Apostles, I realized the road itself had become just as memorable as the destination. Watching the sea mist rise around the limestone stacks at sunrise felt like a fitting ending to one of Australia's great drives.

This trip reminded me that sometimes the journey and the destination deserve equal billing.

How the Great Ocean Road fits into your Australia itinerary

The Great Ocean Road pairs perfectly with Melbourne and Victoria's southern coast. For first-time visitors, I think it's one of the most rewarding short road trips in Australia.

  • My Travel Tip: Drive westbound and spend the night in Apollo Bay. Reaching the Twelve Apostles at sunrise the following morning is absolutely worth the early start.

April - September

No road trip in Australia affected me more than the Red Centre Way.

I've seen photographs of Uluru for most of my life. I thought I understood what it would look like and what it would feel like to stand there.

I was completely wrong.

The drive from Alice Springs toward Uluru slowly strips away everything familiar. The towns disappear, the distances become enormous, and the landscape simplifies itself until there is little left except sky, red earth, and silence.

By the time Uluru finally appears on the horizon, it doesn't feel like arriving at a tourist attraction. It feels like arriving somewhere important.

Watching the rock change from deep purple to orange, then to glowing red at sunrise, remains one of the most memorable experiences I've had anywhere in the world. A few days later, standing on the rim of Kings Canyon and looking across the vast desert landscape only reinforced that feeling.

But what I remember most is the silence. Driving between Uluru and Kings Canyon, there were moments when I turned off the engine and heard absolutely nothing.

No traffic, no wind, no aircraft, no background noise of any kind. Very few places have ever made me feel as small, or as connected to a landscape, as the Red Centre.

This road trip didn't just change how I saw Australia. It changed how I think about travel.

How the Red Centre Way fits into your Australia itinerary

The Red Centre Way is, in my opinion, the most unforgettable road trip in Australia. If you only have time for one major drive, this is the one I would choose. It pairs perfectly with Alice Springs and offers an experience that feels completely different from every other part of the country.

  • My Travel Tip: Give yourself at least five days and don't rush between the major sites. Some of my strongest memories came from the empty stretches of road between Uluru and Kings Canyon.

Why I keep coming back to Australian road trips

Some of my favorite memories in Australia haven't happened when I arrived somewhere. They've happened somewhere along the way.

I can spend one trip driving through the silence of the Red Centre, another following the coastline along the Great Ocean Road, and a few weeks later find myself crossing the tropical north on the Savannah Way.

Every road seems to reveal a completely different version of the country.

If it's your first Australian road trip, don't feel like you need to drive all ten routes. Some travelers will be drawn to the dramatic coastline of Victoria, while others will prefer the remote landscapes of the Kimberley or the vast emptiness of the Nullarbor. T

he best Australian road trip is the one that matches your interests, your pace, and the kind of journey you want to remember long after the drive is over.
